Priv video recording issues

I've got a Priv on AT&T and have this weird random recording problem and am wondering if anyone else has experienced this same issue. Sometimes, not all the time, when I click the record button to STOP recording, it does not stop recording. At that point it continues to record and the phone lags like crazy and I'm left with having to reboot. Sometimes the video isn't corrupted, sometimes it is.

I would assume this is purely a software issue, and am wondering if maybe there is a better video recording app out there than the default?

I also use greenify and am wondering if it's possible disabling certain apps and services could potentially contribute to this problem? I know, it's a reach, but I'm kinda wanting to get this fixed so I'm willing to try all angles/suggestions.

Any input would be appreciated!

Where are your recordings saved? Internal Memory or sd card? If card, is it fast enough? How old?

And, yes, maybe Greenify is hitting the camera if it is using more battery power than Greenify thinks appropriate.

Hey thanks for the reply. I'm saving to an SD card. I did recently upgrade the card but now you have me wondering if there's something wrong with it. Because of the upgrade I assumed it couldn't be the speed, but maybe it's a fault of the card itself? Hmmm..

I will try switching to internal memory to see if it happens again for the interim..

I've looked at greenify and what I'm hibernating and I don't see anything that is disabling the camera app that I can tell. I was just wondering if the camera app tapped into a service that I've somehow disabled or hibernated. I'm new to that app / Android in general since I've been on BB10 since it's release.

This is a common issue when using SD cards or corrupted files. It is an enternal memory problem were it is unable to ribbon your file for sharing. So the raw data is there, but the location cannot be pinpointed, causing your processor to scan your memory (endlessly)

Try formatting your SD card and make sure you've installed the Exfat driver for the android device on the PRIV.

I actually did do that when I first installed the card. Would it be necessary to do that again? 04-03-16 12:47 PM Like 0

I would say it's your card, If you get the Sandisk hcsd 64gb (class 10) it should work flawlessly like mines. But yeah, it doesn't hurt if the extra work saves you the $40 for another card.

You can also alocate your data to a higher mb. Default is like 512kb were as i think i could allocate it to 2048kb or 2mb

I would also agree it is probably the SD card. Switch over to using internal storage for a while, or try a different SD card if you have one, and see if the problem persists.

When you hit the button to stop recording, the remaining data has to be written out to the sd card (buffers flushed), and then the headers have to be written to the end of the file, and then the file pointer has to be rewound and a few bytes are written out at the start of the file. If the kernel is hung up waiting for your SD card to acknowledge the data transfers, then it can appear to be hung.

It looks like there are also some sd card benchmarking apps on Google Play that you could experiment with to see if the card is abnormally slow or buggy.

Since the topic is a rather generic "video issues" I noticed something I thought was odd yesterday. In checking someone's video lag comments, I upped the fps/etc to see how my PNY card reacted (so far, so good). But not thinking, I filmed in Portrait mode. I merely panned back and forth across my den to check the lag. It was fine.

I merely transferred the file to my desktop. Double clicked on it and JetAudio opened it. But the video was shown in Landscape mode, meaning the video was mis-oriented 90 degrees. The Portrait filming showed correct when played back on the Priv but was on its side on the computer. I did not open it in another viewer and erased it. I will now test again. I know that sometimes PHOTO viewers will get the orientation wrong but I did not expect it for video.

Any ideas, other than not filming in Portrait? Or is it just the viewer I used on my computer?

back. I tried 4 other media players including Windows Media Player. They all were disoriented! The video was on "its side!" I guess video was not meant to be filmed in Portrait orientation.

I just made a test as well. I filmed a clip in portrait orientation, checked it on PC. Guess what. It played correctly in portrait view. Using VLC, Windows Media player and the stock Win10 "Films & TV" app.

Interesting. Maybe it was the way it was transferred (Wifi File Transfer Pro) to the computer. Heading to gym but will connect to usb and transfer directly via cable when I get back.

Using Win7 Pro 64bit!

Hmm. Mine went from device to PC via OneDrive. Auto upload from device. And I have OneDrive synced to my PC.

I also copied it by USB cable.

Both good. Perhaps it is the way you transfered it.

Nope, used cable and still WRONG orientation.

Changed video record mode. Still wrong.

Where are you saving? No, that did not change things.

You are using the Priv's camera app?

Yes, sir. The stock camera in video mode. 04-05-16 11:52 AM Like 0

I noticed that when I record in 4k, my camera would act up and not want to stop recording until I closed the app. When I record in 1080p, it works fine. So I think it's a card issue on my part since my GoPro asks for high write speeds when recording in 4k and I have the standard micro sd card from sandisk.

Only QUOTING to keep your attention!

Here's what MediaInfo program (desktop) gives me: Display aspect ratio : 16:9

Should that be 9:16 for a Portrait video.

Also, I did not know that gps location is captured in the Videos. Just saw that. Folks might want to strip that if they are sharing widely.

Okay, now to film in Landscape and see what happens. Plays back fine on computer

MediaInfo shows Display aspect ratio : 16:9
which makes sense for landscape video.

Well I took smcv's advice and tried one of those benchmark apps and now I'm leaning toward it being an SD card issue. Bummer.. I may have to drop a little more cash and get a better one.

I don't seem to be having the same issue F2's having though.. so that's good at least.

The MPEG standard for years did not support metadata to indicate the orientation of the camera. On BB10, we actually took all the pixels and rotated them into new buffers before encoding, so a portrait video was actually 1080x1920 instead of 1920x1080 with some metadata saying "play this back sideways".
All Android devices at the time exhibited the problem you are describing. This is just a limitation of the spec. Apple worked around this by using QuickTime as a container format, into which they could put whatever extra info they wanted. They updated QuickTime Player to recognize the orientation metadata.
The MPEG spec has evolved a bit in the past couple of years so that orientation metadata is now supported, and modern Android devices embed the metadata correctly, but this is really a playback problem. It is up to all the video player software vendors to properly follow the latest spec. They aren't all there yet.

I would try some other players like VLC perhaps. I am not sure which ones on windows tend to get things right all the time.
